SDAFF celebrates the New Year!

One of the highlights of my time here at SDAFF is the out-of-office events that I get to attend and participate in.  This past weekend I got to join Lee Ann Kim, our Executive DIrector and the SDAFF Street Team for the San Diego Chinese New Year Fair which was held at the Asian Pacific Thematic Historic District in downtown.  There was plenty of dim sum, Asian themed fabrics and jewelry, performances, and Lions!! (Well the cute ones that ask for red envelopes!)

The SDAFF Street Team was out in full force to promote tomorrow night's screening of THE WARLORDS Starring Jet Li , Andy Lau, and Takeshi Kaneshiro.  Make sure you get tickets, because I promise that this screening will sell out!

I took something very important from this celebration; the idea of a new year has so many interpretations (which calendar do you follow?) that for me everyday may be a new year with new discoveries and opportunities.  I wish all of you a happy Year of the Tiger!!!

Kami's Intern Blog 2/22/2010

Vincent_chin_by_aacc_news

Does anyone remember Vincent Chin?  To some the name may ring some phantom bell of remembrance, while others may be moved to tears by the recollection of the utter injustice.  For those of you who still don't know what I am talking about, Wikipedia the name.  Learn about the historical indifference rooted within this nation's fabric.  Though cultural and physical differences often create sparks of dissonance, it is important that a striving for understanding and appreciation is embraced, bridges built, and unity reached.

This past week at SDAFF, I've begun to realize how naturalized it has become to remain cool and separated.  As we have attempted to spread the word of our Connect San Diego program, I finally see the conflicting desire of communities to keep and remain safe among themselves, among those who embrace them whole heartedly and unquestioningly.  It is this characteristic that we need to promote and genuinely participate in; this idea that we are out to share selfless love within a community of beautiful difference.

My First SDAFF Blog - Maggy Tjin

2010-02-12_11

Hiii all,

My name is Maggy Tjin, the new intern here at SDAFF. I'm from the Bay Area (CUPERTINO where APPLE was founded). I'm a fourth year student at San Diego State, but I won't be graduating till December. You may be asking why December? Because I went abroad as the first student from SDSU to go off to Jinan University in Guangzhou, China alone. Didn't know what I was getting myself into, but I made the best of it.

At school, I'm a management major, but out in the world I'm just the typical college kid. I am an active member of Alpha Kappa Psi, a co-ed business fraternity, since my sophomore year.

I came to SDAFF to learn and experience the entertainment sector of the world. Also a chance for me to join the up-and-coming dominating world, Asia!
Can't wait to get started with this internship!!!

San Diego Jewish Film Festival Opening Night

Last night was a nice night to watch an Israeli film...about Sumo Wrestlers!  The opening night of the San Diego Jewish Film Festival featured a truly enjoyable experience named A MATTER OF SIZE.  The film in which the cast of wonderful Israeli actors channeled the humor of The Full Monty.  The writing was colored with the difficulties of being overweight with specificity to the Israeli cultural perception of obesity.  The film was also wonderful for including Togo Igawa as the Hebrew/Japanese speaking sumo coach who churns out plenty of the film's surprises.

This film speaks to the importance of self-identity, awareness, and the obvious "what is most important in life" argument that usually makes films predictable.  Valentine's Day can learn a huge lesson from this film; give the audience a great story with truly endearing, complex characters and there is no need for the Taylors (Swift and Lautner) and Julia Roberts to show us what love is.  Let these awesome Israeli Sumo do that!
I will be co-presenting the film on Saturday Feb.13th at the UltraStar Mission Valley at 7:30p on behalf of the San Diego Asian Film Foundation.  I hope that all can attend this fantastic film; it will also play again at the AMC La Jolla on Thursday Feb.18th at 5:00p.
Look at the pics that feature the desserts from the after party.
Until Next Time,

Kami Lennox's First Blog!!!

Kami1

Life in the SDAFF family is bustling.  Seeing first hand what it takes to launch a new program, Connect San Diego, has made me realize my own need to be proactive both within SDAFF as well as in my future projects.  Dealing with a diverse community and working to spread the word is not an easy feat, especially when communities are already full of so many other activities.

It is exciting to see, though, the accessibility developing within the world of media.  As people begin to hone their filmmaking skills, stories will finally be able to be told from an insider's perspective, paving the way for a unity structure created by the people, for the people.

The best part is, this is only the beginning...

Operations Log 02/04/2010

Well this week has been inspirational.  For me, the SDAFF Staff Retreat means that leadership of the Foundation gets to examine what it has done and where it needs to go for a prosperous future.  For Operations, there are goals that need to be met that will make every event that the Foundation puts together and especially the 11th San Diego Asian Film Festival.

This year will truly be a great year with a renewed emphasis on community, connection, culture, and new ways to engage our supporters.  I feel that our organization thinks about the future as much as the present and that means that we will always strive to be innovative and a leader in the community.

I ask now to all who read this, that you take this journey with us.  I always write this, but for me it's important:

Operations Log 02/01/2010

2010-02-01_13

A Monday is a great day to start the month.  There is a feeling of a new beginning.  Right now I am preparing emails and meetings for Connect San Diego.  The new interns in the office are doing very different tasks; Kami, our Connect San Diego Intern is taking in our film for this Saturday's Hmong screening of THE SPLIT HORN, while Sophie is working on getting the SDAFF Operations Manual in organized tip-top shape.

I also intend to continue working on the Filemaker Pro tutorials and discovering posterous.com and storytelling through google, until tomorrow!
